Remembering… |

Mary K. Nenno, life-long housing advocate and NAHRO staff member from 1960 until retiring in 1991, died on February 10, 2007. Before joining NAHRO, she launched her decades-long career as Research Director for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority, Buffalo, New York in 1950. She also served as a consultant to the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University and the Enterprise Foundation of Columbia, Maryland, and directed numerous research studies funded by the federal government and foundations. She served as a Trustee of the CHF and a Visiting Fellow at the Urban Institute in Washington, DC.
Mary Paumen, past MARC-NAHRO President, stated that “Naming the NAHRO Advocacy Award in memory of Mary K. Nenno was a fitting tribute to this woman who was our advocate personally and professionally.” Mary K. Nenno’s legacy lives on in the young professionals for whom she always had time to encourage, support, and challenge them to do their best for residents and communities.
Paumen, applauded Mary Nenno’s many contributions included founding the international committee in the 1960s as well as the Tri Country Conference in 1987. Nenno understood the value of NAHRO and its sister international organizations sharing their knowledge and learning from one another.
Nenno also served as a consultant to the John F. Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University and the Enterprise Foundation of Columbia, Maryland, and directed numerous research studies funded by the federal government and foundations. She was the author of numerous books and articles, including Ending the Stalemate: Moving Housing and Urban Development into the Mainstream of America’s Future, (University Press of America, Inc., January 1996). She was a Visiting Fellow at the Urban Institute in Washington, DC from 1992 to 1996.
